Yesterday (or two days ago now, we’ve just crossed midnight) I went down to La Cigale bar in the Microcentro after work for a pub quiz, or trivia night. It was the first one I’d been to since back in my days in the States, but I was invited by Jonathan Evans, who runs the free Buenos Aires Local Tours. Evans is a British expat who has been hosting pub quizzes for a while now, but La Cigale is sort of a new spot for them. The bar had a really cool vibe and great music, a lot of which I hadn’t heard in a long time, played on overhead.
We got things underway shortly after 8 pm on the third floor, where 5 rounds went by fairly quickly as the 4 teams competed in an almost hushed murmur. In fact, a late comer to our table was bombed out of his mind and claimed to be from Washington state, despite his accent which gave him away as a foreign born citizen. He claimed to have won the National Trivia Championship 2 years running while studying at UCLA, but could barely sit in his seat and yelling the answers as the questions were read. At first we didn’t take him seriously, but dammit if the guy didn’t get almost every question right. In the following rounds we listened and were able to bounce back from last place to second place.
Best of all about the come from behind finish was that we were rewarded with a free bottle of champagne. The only problem for me was that with it being a Monday night, my celebration was short lived and I had to call it a night. But I doubt it will be the last time I head over for a pub quiz. It’s a nice mix of locals, travelers and expats. If you’re interested in finding out about the next pub quiz, contact Jonathan.
